Breech homebirth 2
I was woken up by contractions at 4am. These little suckers wouldn't let me get back to sleep and were coming between 10 mins and 7 mins apart. I lay in bed dealing with the discomfort and trying to peer over my husband as he slept to get a look at the clock. At 6am I gave up getting back to sleep and woke up and cleaned the kitchen. Then I had a shower and washed my hair and shaved my legs.
I rang the midwife and informed her of the situation and she said that she would be here soon.
My husband and daughter had woken up and both were very much excited. I refused to let myself get excited by the possibility of giving birth as I had been having two weeks of fake labour. Once the midwife arrived she said that it was ready to come and that it should be quick. My daughter was sent to day care and our long list of people were informed that labour had started. My daughter was to be picked up by my mother and brought home a bit closer to the birth.
The midwife, my husband and I sat around for a while chatting and then around 11am I went to have a lie down. That of course lasted around 20mins and I couldn't handle the pain while lying down. It was at this stage that I had flash backs to my first birth and it dawned on me what I was going to expect. I didn't start to freak out but I did get a wake up call.
Contractions got closer apart and when they reached 3 mins apart I was told by the midwife that if it got pushy I was not to push. She didn't want to check my dilation as the membranes hadn't ruptured and she didn't want to rupture them, so we waited.
I had one contraction and it was a pushy one. I told the midwife that I felt like I needed to push and she sweetly informed me that I wasn't. Just as I let out a squeal from the discomfort of wanting to push BADLY you heard a massive "POP" and a gush of clear liquid ran down my leg. Oh that felt so good. Midwife checked my dilation and I was 8cm.
My daughter came home around 1pm and at this stage my contractions were steal breathable and she constantly asked me if I was okay, would walk up and give me a kiss and cuddle. She is such a beautiful creature.
It was about here that the contractions started to get heavy and I gave up caring what I sounded like and started moaning and talking loudly through them. The midwife checked the dilation and informed me that all I needed was one more contraction and I would be ready to deliver my baby. She stayed in me to help with the dilation - this is a very weird sensation as you can probably tell.
Contraction was finished and I was given permission to push with the next contraction. My entire labour had been either standing or for a brief moment I tried to sit on a bean bag but kept sliding off the darn thing due to the plastic sheet.
I was leaning over a chair and I had one foot up on a stool. I could feel the baby being pushed down with every contraction but I was not prepared to push. I told the midwife that it just didn't feel ready and that it felt 'stuck'. I had around 6 more contractions and I could feel the baby right there but I just couldn't push with them as I didn't want to tear and it just didn't feel right.
She suggested that I change positions so that the baby would as well as she was coming back of the bum first, not bum. I quickly moved between the contractions and my husband sat on a chair and I sat on his lap. With the next contraction pushing felt a lot safer and I went for it.
My first daughter was born breech as well. She came foot first, then one leg, then the other, then an arm, then another and then finally the head. So I had told myself what to expect.
One push and midwife told me the legs were out and that the arms were coming. So I pushed again to get the arms out and 'WOOSH' my midwife suddenly had this baby in her arms and she handed it to me straight away. I didn't expect it to be so quick and my first thought was "What? Baby already? OMG". The little darling let out a cry and I did the usual motherly "OMG, aren't you beautiful", "Hey baby", kind of talk and moved to the floor where I got comfy.

My husband was amazing. All throughout the birth he was there for me knowing he couldn't do anything but let me labour and even though I could see the discomfort in his eyes he never once panicked and never once made me feel like I needed to worry about anything other than bringing our baby into the world. He didn't get to catch his daughter but that hardly seems relevant now.
Our second daughter was born in front of her big sister Grandmother and mum and dad. She was a complete breech and even though was born exactly on 42 weeks still had patches of vernix on her. I had no tearing and delivered the placenta about 25 mins after. She was on the breast 15 mins after delivery.
She weighted 7lb10 and was 54 cms long. She was my second breech birth, both of which were home births. Welcome to the world little girl
